In Defense of Jim Jones

Call Jim Jones the Rodney Dangerfield of emcees – he gets no respect. None of the critics I know like him; they moan and groan when he’s inevitably brought out as Summer Jam’s “surprise guest.”

I find it weird that he alternates a Boston Red Sox ballcap with a New York Yankees one in his “Na Na Nana Na Na” video, but other than that I’ve got nothing against the guy. He’s kind of an underdog success story, in fact. Who would have guessed that he, and not Cam’ron or Juelz Santana, would become the most commercially viable Dipset member? And who would have known five years ago that he would become the most-buzzed mainstream hip hop artist in the first half of 2009?

With his lazy flow and that stoned/half-asleep look forever plastered to his face, he’s an unlikely star, but it’s not surprising that he’s climbed so high considering how hard he hustles. While most rap artists start gaudy, ill-fated clothing lines and call themselves “entrepreneurs,” Jones has all sorts of projects. He’s got his off-Broadway show, Hip-Hop Monologues (which I haven’t seen but have heard is essentially a reworking of The Vagina Monologues set to breakbeats) and a workout DVD called 60 Sets in 60 Minutes. (Which also stars Damon Dash and Juelz. Seriously.) Then there’s his autobiographical film and a mockumentary called Byrd Gang Blasphemy, which Jones describes as “like a musical Pulp Fiction with a little bit of The Blair Witch Project. People aren’t going to understand what they’re watching.” I know I sure won’t. He’s also got his own record label, is the vice president of urban A&R for Koch, is involved with Russell Simmons’ Hip-Hop Summit, and wants to run for mayor of New York. You know, on a platform of reducing champagne tariffs.

Then there’s the fact that Pray IV Reign isn’t half bad. If you can get past the terrible title – only you, Jimmy, can prevent excessive punning – there are some terrific tracks on it. Call me sentimental, but “Rain” nearly gets me dewy-eyed. Can’t stop prayin’ now/ Though it seems there’s no end to this pain/ Every time I close my eyes I pray for rain/ To wash away this pain. I haven’t felt this passionate about a borderline-corny song since I was into cock rock. (Warrant’s “Heaven” and White Lion’s “Little Fighter” come to mind.) Pray IV Reign is conspicuous for its lack of big name producers and guest rappers, with the exception of some of Jones’ crew mates and Luda, who I’m surprised anyone still lets guest-rap since he always upstages them. Still, the “Let It Out” beat is hot, and Jones even has a song called “Frienemies,” you know, to appeal to the chick-lit demographic.

The album isn’t likely to sway many of my music critic friends, but then again, Jones doesn’t care. He’s probably too busy plotting his next move – opening a chain of low-fat frozen yogurt stands in Manhattan, filming a documentary about rural poverty in Guatemala, or perhaps just touching up on his technique for his upcoming pilates video.
